First hockey draft ever - Yahoo standard league (standard Yahoo categories), 12 teams, head to head, redraft.

Picking 11th:

1. (11) Roberto Luongo G
2. (14) Pavel Datsyuk C,LW
3. (35) Rick Nash LW,RW
4. (38) Ilya Kovalchuk LW,RW
5. (59) Keith Yandle D
6. (62) Jaroslav Halak G
7. (83) Marian Hossa RW
8. (86) Alex Goligoski D
9. (107) Mike Ribeiro C
10. (110) Chris Pronger D
11. (131) Tomas Plekanec C
12. (134) Cam Fowler D
13. (155) Patrice Bergeron C
14. (158) Steve Downie RW
15. (179) Jordan Staal C,LW
16. (182) Tuukka Rask G

Loved the dual position eligibility of some of my early rounders. Some owners are playing some horrible LWs.

QUESTION: Eberle was left at the end of the draft. I have waiver priority #2.

At least 8 teams took a 3rd goalie, so you are looking at perhaps the 28th best goalie if I dump Rask.

Would you dump either Rask, Staal, Downie, or Bergeron for Eberle?

All help appreciated!

Pretty solid, and I'd hold with what you've got -- you might struggle in PIMs

Looks solid, but I may have waited a bit before drafting a Defenseman. I guess it just depends what point categories you need (no idea what the Yahoo standards are).

Thanks everybody. I am going to stand pat.

On defensemen - I agree, I grabbed Yandle and Goligoski far before I wanted. My plan going in was to get one or two good defensemen later than the 5th round, and wait for the last 4 rounds or so to get my last two. But by the time I picked Yandle, the following were gone: Byfuglien, Weber, Green (went in the 2nd round!), Doughty, Visnovsky, Chara, and Lidstrom. I was afraid I was not going to get two (or maybe even one) good defensive guys, so I pulled the trigger. When it got later in the draft, there were a raft of Cs and RWs available - defensemen were getting harder to find. Several guys I had below Fowler had been snapped up.

Odd draft - I did some mocks, and here people went crazy on defensemen and goalies, and left LWs on the board.

This is much different from any other sport due to positional uncertainty. If you sleep on goalies, and they go fast, you are stuck - same with the other critical positions. You have to be much more nimble and go more with the flow than in baseball, football, or basketball. I would never do an autopick hockey draft.

Again, thanks!

Yeah exactly. Every league drafts differently so if Goalies/D-men start going early you have to adjust to make sure you get (at least) that one anchor.
