Jesus Montero as Catcher?

Postby ManOrMachine? » Mon Mar 26, 2012 11:18 am

How long until he gets catcher eligibility in ESPN leagues (10 games)? I'd really like to replace Soto with him, and I'd like to get Jesus early in the year before others get the same idea.

Also, feel free to critique my teams.

I believe grey said last week that he thought Jesus would have C eligibility two weeks into the season.

Seems optimistic to me but I guess I will grab him as soon as I can start sending people to the DL. How big of an upgrade would he be over Soto?

Here's grey's projection for soto and montero : 60/18/75/.260 vs. 55/17/70/.285

Significant difference in BA, but I think the big thing is Montero probably has a lot of upside. Grey has him ranked 139 vs Soto at 241. Also, with Montero seeing a lot of time at DH, he should stay healthier than a full time backstop like Soto.

With his use as DH when he's not catching, I'd be surprised if he didn't rank among the top catchers in terms of plate appearances (assuming he qualifies for the position). That has a good part of his upside in it, to me. And looking at his career numbers, I think .280 is a bit conservative. His 75% contact rate last year belied his .328 average, but his consistently high BABIP puts him in the class of hitters who can pull their shots where they want to. His career numbers have his contact percent in the low 80's anyway. He does indeed have a lot of upside. You might even see 75/20/85/.300 this year, especially if he's the Mariners' go-to DH, hitting behind Smoak (go Cocks) with some token protection from Carp.

As for Soto, he's been pressing to try to relive 2008 since that year, and he's never had BABIP or ISO on the level of Montero. You could just as easily see another .220 campaign as a .285, which I consider his ceiling. Then again, I admittedly hate the man after drafting him in 2009...
