Do you think Hosmer == Morse?

Postby JoeC » Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:16 am

Looking over ADP (average draft position) on MDC (mockdraftcentral), Hosmer's going at 52 and Morse at 77. I also have Hosmer ahead of Morse in my rankings, but the difference between them seems minor, if not non-existent, and certainly not 25 picks-worth! Hosmer gives you some SBs and likely has more room for improvement, but Morse gives you more power.

Do you agree that Morse and Hosmer are of relatively equal value in 2012? Or does the potential of a Hosmer bust-out warrant the 2-round premium in being picked?

Last year's stats:

Hosmer: 0.292BA 19HR 78RBI 66R 11SB 523AB
Morse: 0.303BA 31HR 95RBI 73R 2SB 522AB

The rookie hype train is riding fast right now for quite a few guys. Lawrie in the 4th/5th, Jennings in the 3rd/4th...though I do have to say yahoo has Morse at 67th and Hosmer at 68th. Where are you seeing that discrepancy? Hosmer is built like an 'all around contributor' while Morse is a 'doesn't hurt you' average guy with great power. Its more of a needs play when those two come up in the draft in my opinion.

Its always silly: if 'x' rookie with extreme upside finishes the year with a good line, he's obviously going in the first 6 or 7 rounds. If he stinks up the joint (I'm looking at YOU, Mike Moustakas), well then he's obviously terrible and should be drafted two rounds after Martin Prado (148th vs 169th overall). Makes me appreciate my keeper league where you keep them where you drafted them the year before for the first year. If Lawrie is terrible, he was my 30th round pick so I have no regrets. Not that these guys don't have a chance to be good, but that discrepancy always astounds me.

If you want me to look at your team, post the team. Don't post a link to another site where the team is.
Have you given me all the info I need to judge your team? The number of teams in the league is a good start for the big overall questions.
I don't know who's on your waivers. Don't just ask me who you should pick up. Give me names to choose from.
If you only have one team, post your team in your signature with the league parameters.

On mockdraftcentral. Perhaps with the Yahoo rankings out now, which seem to agree with me that Hosmer is equal value to Morse, that ADP gap will shrink between the two.

Just wanted to check with the wider community to make sure I wasn't crazy! ;)

I think there's too much being priced into his potential. He could be the next Votto with more consistency for 10 SB thrown in. Or he could be a .280 20/10 guy; he did last year's numbers in 523 AB. Just because he only played 128 games doesn't mean he didn't get plenty of ABs to land that 19/11 split. I love him and wish I had not traded him away last season (30th round keeper! ARGH!) but pricing him for his potential rather than his floor is downright dangerous.
