Re-Ranking the Top Pitcher Tiers

Postby wudaben » Tue Jun 21, 2011 2:14 pm

Looking back on the top pitcher tiers from 2010 & 2011 and taking into account current season performances, How would you re rank the top pitchers? I'm looking to gauge overall pitcher value for the rest of the season.

2010 Preseason Tier:

Lincecum
Felix
Greinke
Halladay
Sabathia
Santana
Verlander
Haren
Lester
Wainwright
Hamels
Johnson
Lee
Ubaldo
Beckett
Kershaw
Carpenter
Gallardo
Peavy

2011 Preseason Tier:

Halladay
Felix
Lee
Lincecum
Sabathia
Lester
Kershaw
Liriano
Gallardo
Weaver
Johnson
Verlander
Ubaldo
Hamels
Oswalt
Greinke
Price
Haren
Hanson

Current Ranks?

Halladay
Verlander
Kershaw
Lee
Felix
Weaver
Sabathia
Lester
Hamels
Johnson *Inj
Greinke
Shields
Hanson *Inj
Marcum *Inj
Price
Lincecum
Gallardo

I'm not sure where to put guys currently performing well such as A. Sanchez, Chacin, Wilson, Romero & Cain.

Josh Johnson & Hanson's injuries could negatively effect their rankings but I think Marcum should remain up there somewhere.

Greinke is a tough one as well but even with a 5+ era his ratio of points scored vs. innings pitched places him currently at a scoring level compared to guys like Cliff Lee.

Feel free to provide your own rankings and opinions!

Haren doesn't make the bottom of tier 1?

Absolute miss on my part in the original list, I had him there but missed him when I re-ordered the list. I think I'd have to place Haren somewhere around the Sabathia/Lester area on the original list. Maybe 7-10 range. I have trouble putting Hamels any higher then I originally had him and agree that I probably just have a man crush on Kershaw for putting him at #3.

If Greinke keeps pitching like last night he'll jump into the top 10!

Fwiw I think Verlander, halladay, Kershaw, lee is top 4 today.
Verlander is obviously best at the moment but I had to put Halladay on top based on consecutive years of peak performance.

Would love it if Grey dropped his 2 cents in here but he's probably saving this for his mid season list. Gotta think adding an occasional re-ranking would help eliminate half the trade questions we see around here! I just like to confirm that my delusional rankings are similar to others!
