Just joined a 14 team mixed keeper (keep 10 each yr). Taking over a defunct team that finished...poorly last year. Should probably start using personal pronouns soon. Here are my players:

1. Pat Burrell-OF-TB
2. Carl Crawford-OF-TB
3. BJ Upton-OF-TB
4. Akinori Iwamura-2B-TB
5. Carlos Delgado-1B-NYM
6. Kosuke Fukudome-OF-CHC
7. Ryan Zimmerman-3B-WAS
8. Josh Beckett-SP-BOS
9. Francisco Rodriguez-CL-NYM
10.Manny Corpas-RP-COL
--
11. Chris R. Young
12. Jose Lopez
13. Heath Bell

(Above the line = keepers selected by last owner, below the line = first three rounds of draft selected by moi)

This team ain't good enough to compete this year. Problem is, I'm realizing that this league really, dramatically, intensely hearts the young'ns. Cameron Maybin, Travis Snider, etc. have all already been taken. The best players available are guys who are in the middle/end of their prime (Damon, Nelson Cruz, Beltre, Brett Myers, etc.). I reckon my question is less, "Who do I take next" as "WTF do I do this season?" I'm not going to win, which normally would make me firesale my old guys for yout's, but doesn't look like the league's gonna be too amenable to that. Help?

Well, your team obviously isn't great, but I don't believe in throwing in the towel before the season even starts. You should grab the best guys available for your team. Assuming you have a CI spot on your team, I'd grab Beltre, Damon, Cruz then Myers, in that order. If Upton, Crawford and Zimmerman don't look good in the beginning of the season, then at that point you can trade guys to a contender for better keepers for next year. So start by trying to compete this year, then trade away vets to contenders at the All-Star Break if you're not competing.

Yup, this sounds right - I'll be targeting Beltre next if he falls to me. We don't have CI/MI, but do have 3 UT's. Hopefully the player valuations change by midseason, and I'll be able to trade vets for rooks (if necessary).
