Winter's Bone is really, really good

The movie, not the act! :) And no, it's not a porno.

The funny thing is, I *know* the people in the movie. Not the actual people themselves, of course, but people like that. It's amazing the path of destruction that methamphetamines has carved through the American landscape. It's no joke at all. This film communicates some of that destruction, but also shows that family bonds still mean something and are ever-resilient. Great acting work by John Hawkes and Jennifer Lawrence.

PS: I think the icon I attached to this post stands for radioactivity. I thought it kinda looked like a film canister!

It is a fantastic movie!

The tension runs just under the surface all the time, and set against the overall bleakness of the way they live, it is really amazing.

I sorta grew up in this kind of economic, uhhhhhh... "disadvantaged" situation. The daily grind of poverty and hopelessness is overwhelming at times.

The slightest chance that things will be better is impossible to resist.

Brilliant story telling.

The book was also great, and if you are into southern noir sorta shizz, Woodrell's The Death of Sweet Mister is worth reading.
