Keeper decision

Postby ajk816 » Wed Feb 24, 2010 10:50 am

Grey et al,

I'm in a 10 team H2H 5x5 league (HR, R, RBI, SB, OBP + W, K, ERA, WHIP, S) with a two questions. First is regarging keepers. Our rules allow you to keep two players drafted in rounds 6 and higher. I have a couple options: Tulo 9th, Hill 10th (all FAs are 10th), Nelson Cruz 14th and Adam Jones 18th. Some other teams have a bounty of players as well, so I could look for a trade from:
Reynolds 9/Nolasco 12/Weaver 25
JJohnson 13/Lind 18/Choo 19
Grienke 9/JUP 15/Wandy 26
Felix 7/McCutchen 24/Hanson 26
Zimm 10/Ubaldo 18/Swisher 21

So Tulo as a 9th rounder is an obvious selection. I'd obviously be fine with Jones in the 18th, but I'm questioning whether I should try for someone else.

Part B: The draft. We had our lottery and luckily I got the 2nd pick. If Albert goes first, am I crazy to pass on Hanley at 2? I already have Tulo and it would seem wasteful to take another SS, when I only have the SS and UTL positions. Love the site, love the insight you (and your peeps) provide and would love your opinions on my decisions. Thanks!

I'd keep Tulo and Jones...

I could see passing on Hanley, but I'd go with a big bat at 1st rather than Utley or Kemp.

If you want me to look at your team, post the team. Don't post a link to another site where the team is.
Have you given me all the info I need to judge your team? The number of teams in the league is a good start for the big overall questions.
Is your league H2H? Roto?
I don't know who's on your waivers. Don't just ask me who you should pick up. Give me names to choose from.
If you only have one team, post your team in your signature with the league parameters.
I don't know every single matchup for next week, so if you want me to choose a player for the following week and you think the matchups are important, tell me who they're facing.
There's more than one player with the same last name? Then spell out who you're talking about.
Thanks!

Exactly. It'd be nice if Hanley went one, then I'd be happy to take Pujols. If Pujols goes first, I'll look hard at ARod or maybe one of the other 1Bs. Thanks!

So I was able to trade AHill and NCruz for Zimmerman. So heading into the draft I'm keeping Tulo as my 9th round and Zimmerman as my 10th round. Assuming my league rules stay the same, picking Hanley or ARod #2 would fill up my UTL spot immediately. I don't want to do this. Other than Pujols, who probably goes #1 anyway, who should I be looking at? Braun, Tex, MCab, Fielder, Howard?

Since your league has abolished the dreaded avg. I would take Howard or Fielder.
Pure power.

Considering Hanley is the consensus number 2 pick, why not try to trade down? Ask somebody in the middle of the round to swap first and second round picks with you. Then you definitely have a shot at one of the top first basemen still and instead of the 19th in the second round move up to the 15th or so. It might seem like a trivial improvement, but somebody wants Hanley so why not get something out of it.

So luck was on my side yesterday for the draft. Hanley went #1 so I was more than happy to take Pujols. I know I'm a little short on pitching, but I think I'll be fine. Thoughts?

C - McCann (5.2)
1B - Pujols (1.2)
2B - Stewart (8.9)
3B - Zimmerman (10.9 keeper)
SS - Tulowitzki (9.2 keeper)
OF - Holliday (2.9)
OF - BJ Upton (4.9)
OF - Rios (11.2)
U - A Gonzalez (3.2)
U - Pence (12.9)
SP - Hamels (6.9)
SP - Nolasco (7.2)
SP - Garza (13.2)
SP - Slowey (16.9)
SP - A Chapman (19.2)
RP - Bell (14.9)
RP - Marmol (17.2)

Bench:
N Reimold (15.2)
N Morgan (18.9)
J Lopez (20.9)
W Davis (21.2)
B Posey (22.9)
Krispie Young (23.2)
P Hughes (24.9)
R Romero (25.2)
B Wood (26.9)

You really punted steals, huh? I'm not sure how I feel about that, but you might be able to juggle Morgan in when necessary. Don't get me wrong, the team is very solid. If you have to ignore one thing, it would be average, then the 2nd would be steals. So there's that. Nice pitching staff, not much to complain about there, but there's one thing. You don't have enough reliable starters. Guess you'll need to work the waivers for that.

Say what? How did I punt steals? Projections put me at something like 120 steals, not counting Morgan. I'm easily in the middle of the pack. I'm my experience power dominates H2H. I'll take the chance (a pretty good one) that I'll dominate power and hold my own in steals. I do realize I'm thin on SP, but I'm ok with working the wire as there's always value there.

Those are some generous projections. I've got you at 85-90 steals, tops, from your starters.
