Young Guns Strategy

Postby hotsauce » Fri Feb 07, 2014 5:50 pm

Sup all.

I am in an auction big $ league. Standard 5x5. Lineups are frozen after the draft for the season. Subs are only allowed for DL and demotion to minors. Free agent pickups are only allowed if you saved $10 each to do so.

In the past, I've saved $20-$30 for some moves. But in the process of saving that $, I've always regretted not bidding higher on some players I wanted.

What do you all think about going all young gun SPs? I have to have 7 (6 SPs and a P slot) and am thinking about balking on all the big name stars that command a high price. Instead, I plan on choosing from the following pitchers-

Gray, Bailey, Cole, Salazar, S. Miller, Minor, Moore, Cobb, Cingrani, Wacha, Kluber, Medlen

- All of them "should" have a respectable ERA, comparable to many stars.

- All of them should have 150-160+ strikeouts, as many or more as some established big names.

- I can save some extra $$ by getting these guys for anywhere between $1-12, which is why Jose Fernandez isn't on there. This allows my budget for hitting to grow a substantial amount without feeling like I sacrificed pitching.

- Finally, I should be able to spend at least $10 more (maybe $20) that I would have saved for a move. This is because, in all likelyhood, if anyone on my list bombs, they'll get demoted and I'll get a free move.

So, please give me some feedback on what you think of this strategy. Am I missing anything?

Thanks,

Don (Hotsauce)

Just get good pitchers for good value, doesn't matter what their age is if they're good...

If you want me to look at your team, post the team. Don't post a link to another site where the team is.
Have you given me all the info I need to judge your team? The number of teams in the league is a good start for the big overall questions.
Is your league H2H? Roto?
I don't know who's on your waivers. Don't just ask me who you should pick up. Give me names to choose from.
If you only have one team, post your team in your signature with the league parameters.
I don't know every single matchup for next week, so if you want me to choose a player for the following week and you think the matchups are important, tell me who they're facing.
There's more than one player with the same last name? Then spell out who you're talking about.
Thanks!

Age does play an underlying role in the strategy tho.

An older player like kazmir might get moved to the pen instead of demoted. In that case I'd still have to keep him in my lineup- or spend $10 I forced myself to save.

The younger guys, such as the ones I highlighted, stand an extremely high chance of just being demoted if they get blown up. I get a free move. The $10 I save on that happening can be spent at the auction.

What order would you target those guys in? Based on raw stats alone, not value for the auction buck. I say that because some of the guys in the league are older gents and are very unpredictable on their spending habits.

Its an interesting strategy, and with it you've identified a lot of good targets. In saying that, I think you could grab a few safe older starters to offset the risk, what happens if many of these guys don't pan out? Only so much young upside. Interested to see how the draft works out though!
