Keeper League Q

Postby Jon » Sat Mar 21, 2009 11:14 am

5x5 roto, 13 team league, 5 keepers, and no penalty for keeping players. Of the five keepers, one has to be a pitcher and he is signed for 2009 and 2010. We have a vanilla setup for roster positions:

C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P

My roster is:

Hank Blalock
Asdrubal Cabrera
Miguel Cabrera
Ryan Doumit
Andre Ethier
Chone Figgins
Ian Kinsler
Nick Markakis
Mike Napoli
José Reyes
Álex Ríos
Pablo Sandoval
Mark Teixeira
B.J. Upton
Kevin Youkilis

Jonathan Broxton
Matt Capps
Joey Devine
Zack Greinke
Josh Johnson
Clayton Kershaw
Chad Qualls
Ervin Santana

I won the league last year mainly due to my offense as my pitching was bleh after Bedard crapped out on me. For starters, I was going to keep:

Reyes
Cabrera
Teixeira

Who should I select for the two remaining spots? I was going to go with Kinsler and Kershaw but I think Alexei will be around for my first pick. Should I hold on to Upton then? Thanks for your help, love the site.

I'd hold Kinsler and Upton. You have really great hitters again for 2009 and, I would think, you have to be the favorite going in.

If you want me to look at your team, post the team. Don't post a link to another site where the team is.
Have you given me all the info I need to judge your team? The number of teams in the league is a good start for the big overall questions.
Is your league H2H? Roto?
I don't know who's on your waivers. Don't just ask me who you should pick up. Give me names to choose from.
If you only have one team, post your team in your signature with the league parameters.
I don't know every single matchup for next week, so if you want me to choose a player for the following week and you think the matchups are important, tell me who they're facing.
There's more than one player with the same last name? Then spell out who you're talking about.
Thanks!

What if you had to choose between Kinsler and Upton? Reason being is that one of my five keepers has to be a pitcher and I am already keeping Reyes, Cabrera, and Teixeira.

And who do you think I should choose to keep from my pitching staff knowing that they are signed for this year and next? I am leaning towards Kershaw but only because I don't want to keep a closer and Santana is - as you have put it - risky. Thanks again.

Sorry, I missed that one had to be a pitcher. I'd keep Josh Johnson over Kershaw, but it's close. I'd keep Kinsler over Upton, but that's close too.

Both Kinsler and Markakis are better keepers than blowjob. Kinsler should be your 4th offensive keeper. You're in a league that only rosters 3 OF, meaning the falloff at OF is not nearly as steep as it is at the middle infield positions. Even if you, like, hit your head real hard and for some reason prefer Upton to Kinsler, go with the second baseman on replacement value, alone.

As far as pitchers go - there has got to be someone in the league with a better pitcher than what you're carrying who wants one of Upton or Markakis. I'd suggest exploring trade first, but if that doesn't pan out, go with Josh Johnson. No, I'm not kidding. He's far enough removed from TJ surgery and has all the upside of Kershaw with quite a bit more polish. If you don't go with Johnson, then Broxton. Kershaw is only the third most desirable pitcher on your team.

I prefer Kinsler over Upton at first blush as well considering our roster setup. However, I almost certain that Alexei Ramirez will be available with my first draft pick and I am not nearly as bearish on a BJ (Upton) as you are.

I am definitely guilty of overlooking Johnson, though. He has upside and polish. Thanks for your help.

Wanted to follow up on this thread. For reference, all my of league settings are in preceding posts. I drafted last week and this is what I came up with:

C - Pablo Sandoval
1B - Mark Teixeira (Keeper)
2B - Ian Kinsler (Keeper)
3B - Miguel Cabrera
SS - José Reyes (Keeper)
OF - Álex Ríos
OF - Jay Bruce
OF - Corey Hart
Util - Brad Hawpe
BN - Jayson Werth
BN - Justin Upton

SP - Cole Hamels
SP - Carlos Zambrano
RP - Jonathan Broxton
RP - Chad Qualls
P - Brandon Lyon
P - Jason Motte
P - Carlos Villanueva
BN - Josh Johnson (Keeper)
BN - Kelvim Escobar
BN - Scott Downs
BN - Ubaldo Jimenez

I originally drafted Jermaine Dye but I traded him plus George Sherrill for Corey Hart. I have always liked Hart and considering that I have a lot of high average guys on my team I think I can absorb his deficiencies.

I picked up Kelvim off waivers and plan on DLing him. Duchscherer was also dumped for some reason and I was also DL him since he waive three DL spots. If you want to know where I drafted each player at let me know. What do you think Grey, et al.?

Think your hitting's really solid. Your pitching leaves a little to be desired. I love Hamels, but he's obviously a bit more risky after the elbow issue. Big Z is/has been a mess. I think you could've used a lot more of a grounded starter instead of him. I like the Kelvim pickup. Duchscherer I'm not that crazy about. He's injured and they're talking about moving him back to the bullpen.
